SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Generally, SEO can be defined as the activity of optimizing websites in order to make them more search engine-friendly, thus getting higher positions in search results.

When a search term is entered into the search box, the search engine makes a determination as to a) what sites are relevant for the word(s) the user has typed in and b) in what order to list them. This determination is worked out by a hugely involved and complicated algorithm written into the search engine itself. So for the word computer, the search engine will first look at all the sites which it considers relevant to computers and then display them in an order that it will calculate, based on a series of things.

Various tactics such as effective use of keywords (search terms), meta tags (website coding) and external links (links from other sites to yours) all help with boosting a site's ranking (how high up a search listing it goes).

Approximately 12 years ago I began my internet marketing journey. Fascinated by how this big world web functioned I dove head first into everything there was to know about search engines. Like a few others at that time, we held tight to these systems and let them develop and grow as Google (and the other engines that came and went) grew. Eventually and naturally, the term SEO, search engine optimization, was coined and an industry in and of itself was born.

Then came along Local SEO a few years back (2007). Google Maps was created, later to be called Google Places and the need for SEO became mainstream for businesses of all sizes. It was at that time a natural progression occured for me and those like me to become consultants.
